Teamwork Part 1

“Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, and a civilization work.’’   — Vince Lombardi

I think this is one of the hardest aspects of any managers’ job:  getting individuals to put aside their own selfish desires for the good of the team/company.

In sports, you will often hear players on successful teams use phrases like “I’ll do whatever gives us the best chance to win,” or “If that’s what the coach needs me to do, I’ll do it.” Whereas more common phrases in an office are “That’s not my job,” or “I don’t have time to help so and so out.”

When a culture of teamwork, camaraderie, and friendship exists, employees will go above and beyond their “typical” job duties to help out those around them.

The trick is creating a culture where these feeling exist.

In the next post, I want to suggest a few things I think can help foster an environment of teamwork within your company.
